Vinyl silicone oil, as a key raw material for additional liquid silicone rubber and silicone gels, sees increasing demand in downstream industries such as new energy vehicles, semiconductor electronics, and medical devices. The pace of domestic substitution of high-end products is further accelerating.
Thanks to the active vinyl groups in its molecular chain, vinyl silicone oil can undergo silicon-hydrogen addition reactions with hydrogen-containing silicone oils under the action of platinum catalysts. This process results in crosslinking and curing without the release of small molecules. After curing, the material possesses excellent properties such as resistance to high and low temperatures, insulation, and good biocompatibility. It serves as a crucial raw material for producing liquid silicone rubber, electronic potting compounds, and medical silicone products. The viscosity and vinyl content of these products can be customized according to needs, covering various grades such as general industrial, electronic, and medical levels.
Industry research data indicates that the total market size of vinyl silicone oil in China is expected to reach 4.56 billion yuan in 2026, representing a 7.8% increase year-on-year. Among these, demand for high-end grades specifically used in the electronics, new energy, and medical sectors is growing at a rate of over 15%, becoming the main driver of industry growth. Competition in the market for ordinary general-purpose products is intensifying, and profit margins are narrowing. Resources in the industry are increasingly directed toward high-purity, customized functional products.
In the field of new energy vehicles, vinyl silicone oil is widely used in battery pack seals, insulation of high-voltage wiring harnesses, and high-temperature resistant cushioning materials. As the penetration of new energy vehicles increases, demand for related materials continues to rise. The semiconductor and optoelectronics industries have strict requirements for electronic-grade vinyl silicone oil with low volatility and low ionic impurities, which is used in LED packaging and component potting protection. In the medical field, compliant medical-grade vinyl silicone oil can be used in medical catheters and silicone consumables. There are very high standards for product purity and batch stability.
In the past, high-end vinyl silicone oil in China relied heavily on imports. However, in recent years, leading domestic companies have improved their production processes. Production lines capable of producing ten thousand tons of high-purity vinyl silicone oil are now operating at full capacity. Through intelligent manufacturing techniques such as real-time spectral analysis and closed-loop polymerization control, the vinyl content and viscosity of products can be precisely controlled. Batch variability has been significantly reduced. Some grades have obtained certifications under the IATF16949 automotive standard and ISO13485 medical device standards, breaking through overseas technical barriers and gradually achieving import substitution.
Industry experts believe that future development in this field will follow three main directions: First, downstream demand will drive the upgrade to higher quality products; low-ionic, low-volatility electronic/medical-grade products will become the focus of research and development. Second, production processes will become more intelligent and sustainable, reducing energy consumption and the use of organic solvents, while improving batch consistency. Third, vertical integration within the industry chain will occur, with companies offering customized silicone oil solutions to downstream customers. However, price fluctuations of raw materials and technical barriers related to high-end formulations remain challenges that the industry must face. Domestic companies need to continue investing in research and development to narrow the gap with international top-tier products and gain a foothold in the global organic silicon new material market.
